The 2012 Summer Games Triathlon will begin and end in Hyde Park in London. The women's triathlon takes place on August 4 while the men compete on August 7. These will be single races with no heats and consist of a 1,500m swim in the Serpentine lake; a seven-lap, 40km bike ride around Buckingham Palace and the Wellington Arch; and a four-lap, 10km run around the Serpentine to finish.
The Olympic Triathlon debuted in Sydney in 2000, which drew in more than half a million spectators. The six triathlon events held at the past three Summer Games have been won by athletes from six different countries: Canada & Switzerland in 2000; New Zealand & Austria in 2004; and Germany & Australia in 2008. The 2012 gold medal in London is up for grabs and Games organizers with Locog have promised the 2012 triathlon will be “one of the best events of the Games”.
